[Book Tour] Rewriting is Simple. Really - Three Days on Mimosa Lane by Anna Destefano #Giveaway

THREE DAYS ON MIMOSA LANE
Seasons of the Heart, Book 2
Publisher: Montlake Romance
Publication Date:  July 23, 2013

One day can change your life forever...Three days change a painful past into a beautiful tomorrow...

Once, Sam Perry had it all. A loving marriage, an amazing job she adored as a preschool teacher, and a beautiful home. She was safe, happy and secure. Then the unthinkable happened... Watching his once carefree wife withdraw into herself was almost more than Brian Perry could handle. The only thing that kept him going was knowing that he loved her more than life itself. Moving her out of New York to Chandlerville, a small, quiet suburb of Atlanta, felt right. Anything, to get her away from the memories of the buildings, and her world, crashing around her.

Now, two sons and many years later, Sam cherishes the new life on Mimosa Lane that Brian built for them. Until lightning strikes twice... Called a hero by her small community, Sam feels more like a coward than ever. Instinct draws her into an altercation at her children's school- an instinct that also drives her away from the warm cocoon of her family. Brian refuses to lose his wife again. He agrees to give her the space she asks for, but he soon realizes space isn't something they and their children can afford. He knows their love can still conquer all. But this time he'll need their entire community to help him win his wife back.

Rewriting is Simple.
REALLY.

The rewriting of a full draft…rarely wants to be rewritten. But your job as an author of a WIP isn’t over, just because you’ve written the first “The End” of your project.

Either the overwhelming work left to be done is going to win, or you’re going to win because you’re a professional writer. And the only way for you to win, is to take control and show those rewrites that you’re the boss…for as long as it takes for you to believe it, too ;o)

The rewrites for my last release, Three Days on Mimosa Lane (http://amzn.to/151WHLL), had to happen quickly and flawlessly, and I was working on fumes. But they happened. They always happen. The only control I had was whether or not those revisions would make the book better. I was determined that they would, no matter how little time or energy I had left in my creative tank.

How did I do that?

Simple.

No, the process isn’t simple. It’s your job to keep it simple—despite the chaos swirling around you. You have to know what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and how you plan to make what you need to do next with your manuscript happen.

When you’re drafting with a plan (and you have a plan, right?) or rewriting with a plan (because you revamp your plan for your story before you rewrite, right?), you stop the overwhelming, sinking feeling that you can’t succeed at something as complex as creating a novel–by focusing on one piece of the story at a time, until the whole manuscript finally begins to take shape.

I encourage students to do what I do…focus on the beginning, middle, and end of your characters’ journeys, as you plot or deconstruct or draft write a novel. I also teach students to pinpoint the emotional focus of a character at the inciting incident of a story, then at the black moment, and only then at the middle of the book. If you can define for yourself or me or a critique partner what your character’s internal journey will be at these three story points , you’ll never be writing or rewriting into a void.

An example?

My protagonist/heroine in my next Mimosa Lane WIP (Book 3 of my Seasons of the Heart series) grew up in a dysfunctional family. That could have made her angry at the world and rebellious (as it does our hero, but that’s another blog post). Instead, while she’s wary of ever making family work for her, it’s made her a champion of other families and of the kids she teaches and cares for in her job (she’s an amazing assistant elementary school principal, whom you get to know in Seasons of the Heart Book 2, Three Days on Mimosa Lane http://amzn.to/151WHLL). Sound interesting? I hope so.

But that’s only the beginning. It’s nowhere close to a full story arc. Not yet. And if I’m going to rewrite my muddled and wandering draft into the best story it can be, I need to understand my protagonist’s emotional/internal journey as I weave her in and out of the external story points I’ve already created–I need to motivate her carefully and throw the right conflict at her for the right reasons (using my hero and key secondary characters), so that she’ll change and grow and achieve a goal by the end of the book that she/we wouldn’t have thought possible at the beginning–claiming the happy family she’s always wanted, even if that family can never be the perfect thing she dreamed of as a little girl.

The simple part (that’s taken me a long time to arrive at, longer than most other stories I’ve written, because of the complexity of the characters and community I’m writing about):

Heroine at the story Inciting Incident: She’s surround herself with love and family (other peoples’), focusing on her job and helping the ideal community she’s grateful to be a part of. Her success at her job helps other families and the children she’s responsible for thrive, and that makes her happy, or so she’s convinced herself.

Heroine at the story Midpoint: She can’t help two special children without working with and growing closer to the man and the family she’s secretly longed to know better. But inviting them into her life exposes her to the kind of chaos (and the chance of risking her heart) she’s refused to allow into her life since she left her own damaged family behind. She realizes that all this time she’s been “hiding in plane sight” and running from her past and fear of giving her heart to anyone again. She’s not equipped to handle the choices and risk that loving the hero and his daughter challenge her with–even though she can’t stop herself from fighting for them.

Heroine at the end of the story: The hero’s own damaged past and his secrets blow up in the most public, challenging, personal way–he is absolutely not the right man for an emotionally risk-averse person like our heroine.  But neither is anyone else, she’ s learned. All this time, she’s believed she’ll never find love, because loving someone will never be safe enough for her to handle. Only now she’s in love with the one person who should be the antithesis of safe to her–but she hasn’t been able to do anything all along but fight beside him and for him and his daughter. Has she learned enough to accept that this perfect family that has come to her will always be flawed and challenging and scary to her (because she loves them so much and can’t imagine losing them)–and that she can handle all of that, she can handle anything, as long as she has their love in her life?

As I rewrite, if I have these emotional turning points in mind as I work on every scene (and, you know, a thousand other details that I need to work out as well, because this series is so rich in setting and theme and secondary character arcs and community and so forth), I’ll keep my heroine on track and ever evolving and growing and changing from the amazing person she is at Page 1 to the even more amazing woman she becomes at the end of the story.

Simple, right? Nah. But it’s your job, so get to it…

This is story analysis. You do it while you plan story, while you draft story, and while you rewrite story. You’re a creator, but you’re also a crafter. You craft story and refine and shape and rework, like any other artist, until you show the reader EXACTLY what you see, once you can finally see clearly yourself.

What could be easier than that ;o)

What Hot Italian Men & Missing Fingertips Have to do with Finding Love on the Internet

Finding love on the Internet...Um...hum. Now this is going to sound funny coming from me as I did pen Love Request and in it, Ciara and Hunter reconnect via Facebook, not having seen each other since they were eight or nine years old...
But while it makes a great story, I don’t recommend it, finding love through the net, or attempting to find love through the net...
Here’s why:
I’ve watched far too many episodes of Law & Order, both the SVU and the Criminal Intent.
Here’s the lowdown: You just may find true love online, or you may end meeting a sexy Italian man who after a few messages, suddenly begins to call you asking for money, claiming that he’s stuck in Saudi Arabia for his job and his paycheck takes a few days to come through, but he must see you now! Can you wire the funds? (This happened to someone I know.)
A Criminal Intent episode that shocks me every time I watch it: In it, a very sick girl named Erica sends a heart wrenching memoir chronicling a life of illness, abuse, and heartache to an editor with a big publisher. Erica has so many health problems, she can’t get out of bed most days, and can never see visitors. People only talk to this little girl on the phone and e-mail. Her voice is so sweet, her words so wise. Through e-mail, the editor edits her book and she published.
People love her story, they want to donate money to help her. One man buys her a fancy, expensive wheelchair and even jewelry. People speak to her in chat forums, after all, her health doesn’t allow her to go in public. Her medications are paid for. A benefactor shows up at the pharmacist and picks up...not the meds...but the money, with the pharmacist keeping a percentage.
You see, Erica never existed. It was really just a very greedy couple—the woman having a sweet voice.
They duped thousands of people. One man even died because he discovered Erica wasn’t really Erica.
SVU...so many women raped, murdered, and thrown in Dumpsters, some of them having connected with men online.
Frankly, Ciara is lucky. She knew Hunter long before, though really, so much time has passed, she doesn’t know him anymore, but she takes the smart route and communicates with him for weeks before agreeing to meet him in person, and when she does, it’s a public place.
I’m not saying NOT to find love online if it’s in the cards. If it happens, great...but be careful. Always remember you don’t really know who’s behind that avatar.
1. Do your research.
2. Never send them money.
3. Always meet in a public place.
4. If you’re ever uncomfortable, get away, stat. If driving, watch for headlights and be sure you’re not followed. Take an alternate route to your home.
5. Never give out your address until you’re sure.
6. Don’t hesitate to carry Mace.
7. Tell someone where you are going and set a time to report in with that person.
Not a very romantic post, but hey, remembering those few things beats being raped, murdered, and thrown in a Dumpster with your fingertips cut off to prevent identification. (That’s from SVU.)
So...I think we can all agree love is great, love is wonderful, love makes the world go round...but be safe as you search for it.

BOOK BLURB: Teghan Jacobs didn't think anything could be worse than learning she's pregnant by a man she's been dating less than six months. Boy, was she wrong. Her mother, whose drowning in the river of denial, refuses to take a side on the issue. And her overbearing, manipulative father threatens to disown her and cut her off from her trust fund if she doesn't have an abortion.

Donnie Marks couldn't be happier. The woman he loves, the woman he fought so hard to be with, is going to have his baby. Life has never been better. But when she shows up in his dorm room, sobbing and heartbroken, he learns the horrible truth of what happened. He vows to get revenge on the man who's responsible: Teghan's father.

Donnie watched as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. He smiled. "Do I make you nervous?"
"No."
He studied her for a moment before cocking his head to the side and asking, "So, why do you do that thing?"
"What thing?"
"That thing with your hair. You've done it every time I've seen you," he said.
Teghan felt the heat rising inside her as she looked at her feet and back at him. His eyes glimmered with desire that, she guessed, rivaled her own. She swallowed hard and reminded herself he was off limits. She'd just made things right with Alex, and there was no doubt that if she broke Alex's heart again, her brother, her father, and their friends would never forgive her. It was something she wasn't willing to risk.
But oh, how she wanted to feel him. To place her hands on his hard abs and feel his muscles tense beneath her touch. As he approached, she watched his body, seductively outlined by the light. Her breath caught in her throat when he reached out, took her hand, and gently pulled her to him. It was as if they were two halves of a mold that fit together perfectly. She sucked in a breath and held it. Was he going to kiss her? A small part of her wished he wouldn't, while the rest of her screamed for it.
Donnie cupped her face in his hand, caressing her cheek with his thumb. Teghan's eyes fluttered closed at the feel of his lips coming close to hers. It was like the time she'd stuck her finger in a light socket; a jolt of searing hot energy shot through her body, but then eased away, leaving her stunned and aroused. "We shouldn't do this," she whispered, her lips brushing against his as she spoke.
"Do you want me to stop?" he said.

 Waterfalls Don't Die
By
Kara Leigh Miller

Waterfalls don't die….that's the same phrase I heard repeated each time someone heard the title of my book, Death of a Waterfall.

            I know waterfalls don't die.

So, why did I decide to title my book that? Because it's all symbolic. My heroine, Teghan Jacobs has been fascinated with waterfalls ever since a childhood family vacation to Niagara Falls. Her father, Rob, installed a waterfall in their backyard, which is where Teghan spent a lot of time as a child. It's also where she goes anytime she has a problem or just needs to think. They are her safety net, her one constant thing that never changes or dies.  However, at the end of the book, her father tears down her waterfall, leaving her angry, sad, hurt, and betrayed. Hence, the death of her waterfall.

“Are you going to be okay?” he asked gently.  All he wanted was to sit beside her and hold her.  Instead, he stayed where he was, leaning up against the front porch post.

Avery’s gaze connected with his.  “Yeah.  I’ll be okay.”  Something in her tone called to him.  He was torn.  Move next to her, or back off?  Which one?

Moving to sit beside her won.  Whatever Avery did next, Lucas would deal with it.  He perched beside her on the swing.  The old wood creaked under his weight.  Avery watched him with those big, beautiful greenish gray eyes.  “Do you want me to go?  I’ll leave you alone if that’s what you want.”  Lucas hoped she would want him to stay, but wouldn’t blame her one bit if she chose the latter.

Why did he care so much?  Why did it have to be the one time that he started to feel again, it was for a woman that complicated things?  Ah, but life was so cruel, of course there were no answers to these things.  He should have never gotten so involved, so invested.  Avery wanted a life filled with traveling, because that’s what a singer did.  Lucas needed to stay in one place, find some roots and actually plant them.  Alone, or not alone.  What mattered was that those things needed to happen.  No more life as a shadow.  No, he was ready to find his own way.  How could he have lived, but yet not lived, for all of his adult life?

“You can stay,” Avery whispered.  She looked so stricken and sad, her eyes filled with confusion and a sadness Lucas had never seen.  She huddled by the arm of the swing, rocking back and forth, occasionally darting her gaze to look at him.  All Lucas wanted to do was gather her in his arms, hold her and make her problems fade into the background.

For what seemed like ages, they sat in silence again.  The swing squeaked while the rocking motion put Lucas in a daze.  This was nice.  Just sitting back and enjoying a breeze, not having to do anything.  Lucas flexed his wrists and when he moved his right one to rest on the seat, he found Avery’s hand there.  Sparks of awareness flowed through him like hot lava.  When his hand lingered over hers, he expected her to snatch it away, but was surprised when she didn’t.  Lucas took that as a sign.  He entwined his fingers with hers and shifted his body so he could face her.

“Avery, I want you to know that I like you.  A lot.  When I came here, I never expected things to progress like they did, and I’m not sorry for anything except for not coming to you with the truth earlier.  I wish I could make you understand.”  Lucas rushed the words.  He squeezed her hand, loving the way her fingers fit so perfectly with his own.

When had he started thinking like that?  Geez.  His mind was all over the place when it came to Avery Callimer.  Lucas had to admit he kind of liked it, though it terrified him at the same time.  What was this effect Avery had on him?  He could never give her the life she so desired.

Okay, what the fuck?  It’s not like she’s even asked for anything from you, other than the truth, so why in the world would you even think like that?

Yep.  There, once again, went those strange feelings.  He needed to think straight.  Not like that happened anytime he was in close range of this tantalizing woman.

Fictional and Celebrity Crushes

I think we all have them. Fictional and celebrity crushes.  I know I've had my share.  I thought I'd share a few of them, throughout my childhood and teen years, and a few from now.

The first one, and I was really young, but I remember watching Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles with my brother and sister when we were younger. Loved that show! I don't know if it was because I liked purple or what, but I had a kid crush on Donatello.  Yes, I'm going out on a limb here to share that strange one with you  <Grins>  I was young! What can I say?

Then another one from when I was younger....I loved to watch the Waltons. It was one of my favorite shows.  Maybe it was the young writer in me, but I definitely crushed on John Boy Walton.  There was just something about him...:)

In my teen years, I remember having the BIGGEST crush on country singer Bryan White. With his gorgeous young boy looks and not to mention that sexy singing voice to go with it....oh yeah, I was hooked. I need that man to come back and make some more music. His voice was very soft, soothing and could send me into a world of shivers. I was so close to meeting him one time. I think I was fifteen.   I remember my dad threatened to tell him I wanted to marry him and I was so embarrassed. And I know that if we'd ended up meeting Bryan White that my dad would have gone through with his threat. But, we never got a chance to. We had to get to the airport to pick up someone, and I couldn't convince him to let me stay. Lol

Another teen crush I had was on Barry Watson. Remember the show 7th Heaven? He played Matt Camden. I loved that show, and it didn't hurt that I got to see Barry Watson on it.

One of my biggest celebrity crushes- Keith Urban.  Blond, blue eyes, sexy accent, guitar player, and a great singing voice to go with it? Hellooooo, I'm sold! I would so love to get guitar lessons from him and sing a duet or two.  I've been to six Keith Urban concerts and enjoyed each and every one of them. I hooked my best friend on country music, and especially Keith so I have someone right there that understands my infatuation with him.  I won't say how many Keith Urban T-shirts I have and not to forget the Keith Urban blanket. Oops....did I just tell you that? Aww, man!

If you've ever watched the TV show One Tree Hill, you'll know the next fictional crush I'm going to mention. I actually got into that show late, at about season seven, but I was hooked. Soap Network started showing the older episodes, so I set them to DVR and watched it from the beginning, then I went out and bought them on DVD. I absolutely crushes on Lucas Scott.  (Go figure, another guy that likes to write)

My latest fictional crushes- theres two. I love Deacon from Nashville. And I'll admit, I am fictional crushing on one of my own characters, Lucas Bennett.

There is something about Lucas that makes me shiver. His journey to a happily ever after had him facing a lot of demons. Lucas is hard to read and understand at first, but he definitely went through changes. He isn't one to open up, but when he does, he's sweet, funny and very protective. I was surprised by many of the things Lucas did. Yes, I wrote him, and was still surprised at how much Lucas changed.  He went from this gruff, detached guy to a tender, lovable one.  He's perfect for Avery.
So now that I've shared a handful of my fictional/ celebrity crushes. I want to know....who are some of yours? C'mon. Don't by shy! :)

Thank you so much for having me here today! Even if I'm a little beet red from some of my childhood crush quirks :)

[Guest Post] Succubus Rising by BR Kingsolver

BOOK BLURB

Book 3 of the Telepathic Clans Saga, Succubus Rising

The Goddess has plans for Brenna and Rebecca, and the Goddess has a wicked sense of humor.
Rebecca Healy is a true wilder, growing up with no contact or knowledge of other telepaths. Discovered by a Clan member on the streets of San Francisco, she felt like she’d hit the jackpot. Finally, she knew what she was, or at least she thought she did.
When Brenna O’Donnell, long-lost heir of the O’Donnell Clan, and the strongest telepath in history, is returned to her family, she and Rebecca form a tight bond. Brenna has it all, looks, money, power, and men falling all over her.
Rebecca isn’t jealous, but it would be nice to find someone who would really love her and stick around in the morning. She’s intrigued by a handsome South American general, but of course, he has his sights set on Brenna. Carlos de Vargas wants more than love. His Clan has its back to the wall, and they hope for an alliance with O’Donnell. An alliance that would lead to war.
The story began in The Succubus Gift and continued in Succubus Unleashed. In Succubus Rising, questions are answered and new mysteries are revealed.

AUTHOR BIO

I made silver and turquoise jewelry for almost a decade, ended up in nursing school, then took a master’s in business. Along the way I worked in construction, as a newspaper editor, a teacher, and somehow found a career working with computers.

I love the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains. I’ve skied since high school and I’ve hiked and camped all my life. I love to travel, though I haven’t done enough of it. I’ve seen a lot of Russia and Mexico, not enough of England. Amsterdam is amazing, and the Romanian Alps are breathtaking. Lake Tahoe is a favorite, and someday I’d like to see Banff in Canada.

I have a very significant other, two cats and two Basset Hounds. I’m currently living in Baltimore, nine blocks from the harbor, but still own a home in New Mexico that I see too infrequently.

Twitter: @BRKINGSOLVER

I was asked recently what inspired me to write The Succubus Gift, and by extension the Telepathic Clans series. It’s a rather complicated answer.

I’ve long had a problem with the morality in our country and in Western European history. A patriarchal society with women as chattels absolutely repulses me. It’s very evident that women have the same intelligence as men. Women are senators, astronauts, and leaders of countries (though not in the U.S., which is one of the few countries which has never had a female head of state).

But until recently, women were considered property – either of their fathers or of their husbands. An unmarried woman is looked on with pity, as though she was defective. An assertive, ambitious woman is called a lot of things, but few of them are complimentary.

I think that’s a large part of what drew me initially to urban fantasy books. The genre is full of assertive, strong, kick-ass women who stood on their own and didn’t apologize for being who they are.

Another thing I found in urban fantasy was sexual women. Historically, women in literature are either wives, old maids, or harlots. Sometimes they were sorceresses or queens, but again they fit into the old pigeon holes. Richelle Mead’s Georgina Kincaid breaks that mold, as do some other characters, but it still bothered me that for a woman to be blatantly sexual, she had to be working for the devil.

Men in literature can be studs and leave a trail of broken hearts in their wake, and as long as they eventually settle down, it’s fine. A woman gets raped once and her reputation is besmirched forever.

I’ve been a science fiction and fantasy fan since a teacher gave me one of Andre Norton’s books in 7th grade. I’ve always thought the idea of telepathy was the neatest thing I could imagine. So when I started thinking about what kind of character could be strong, kick-ass, and blatantly sexual while still being one of the good guys, I thought about the idea of a telepath who could drain a man’s life energy, but wasn’t aligned with the devil, and didn’t do him permanent harm.

From there the idea started to grow. I envisioned a matriarchal society, worshipping a Goddess, with Telepathic Gifts where the women are as strong as the men -- a society of equals. And in an equal society, women and men are free to express their sexual identities.

But I didn’t want to write erotica. I wanted fantasy stories like the ones I like to read. The Succubus Gift has been well received and the reviews have been far better than I dared to hope. Readers tell me Succubus Unleashed is even better, which is nice to hear. The third book in the series, Succubus Rising, has just been published and the early reviews have been very good.
