Silk & Scandal

BLURB:
Eight
years ago…
Thomas
Cartwright and Lady Nicola Fitzgibbons were friends. Over the wall separating
their homes, Thomas and Nicola talked of all things – his studies to become a
barrister, her frustrations with a lady’s limitations.
All
things end.
When
her diplomat father gains a post in Hong Kong, Nicola must follow. Bored and
alone, she falls into scandal. Mired in his studies of the law and aware of the
need for circumspection, Thomas feels forced to sever their ties.
But
now Lady Nicola is back…and she won’t let him ignore her.
Nicola dashed at her cheek. “Then why did you stop writing?”
The concern bled from his features and, dropping her hands,
he stood from her. “We shouldn’t have begun a correspondence. We are too far
apart in consequence.”
A burn started in her chest. “That is not a reason.”
His brows shot together. “Of course it is. You are the
granddaughter of an earl. I am the son of no one. Literally. I do not know who
my parents are, Nic. How can it not be a consideration?”
Lord, this was less than a consideration. “Thomas, you are
the adopted son of a baronet and his wife. My father likes you, and that is the
only care I have. Why can we not be friends?”
He looked as if he still wished to protest, but then his
shoulders slumped. “Do you really not know?”
“Thomas, all I wanted was to be your friend.” Stepping closer
to him, she took his hand. “It is all I’ve ever wanted.”
A hush fell. Brows drawn, eyes unfathomable, he stared down
at her. Of a sudden, she was intensely aware of her breath, of the way her
chest rose and fell and how very close he was.
“You think we are friends.”

Once she learned to read (First phrase – To the Beach. True story), she was
never without a book, reading of other people’s fantastical worlds and

Fairy tales,
Famous Fives, fantasies and fancies; horror stories, gumshoe detectives,
science fiction; Cassandra read it all. Then she discovered Romance and a true
passion was born.
So, once upon
a time, after making a slight detour into the world of finance, Cassandra tried
her hand at writing. After a brief foray into horror, she couldn’t discount her
true passion. She started to write Romance and fell head over heels.
The love
affair exists to this very day.

What
sparked your interest in becoming a romance writer?
I’ve
always wanted to be a writer, from the time I first learnt how to write. I’ve
always been a massive romantic as well – one of my very favourite novels, that
I read over and over as a kid, is Jane Eyre. I devoured romance novels
once I discovered them, and when I finally decided to take the plunge and
attempt the whole writing for publication thing, I gravitated toward what I
loved – romance.
One
of your favorite quotes.
Leaf
on the wind.
I
have this delusion that I can control every circumstance in my life, which
causes no end of anxiety as I run over endless scenarios of what COULD happen.
Often, I have to stop and remind myself that what will happen will happen, and
I can’t predict or control it. Thus, I try to be a leaf on the wind and go
where life takes me.
I
also like Beware of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with
ketchup. Heh.
What
type of book have you always wanted to write?
A
massively successful one that will go down in history as the Best Book Ever
Written. ;)
Seriously,
I’ve always wanted to write epic fantasy. I was a massive fan of David and
Leigh Eddings, as well as Susan Cooper, Sara Douglass and countless others. I’m
really enjoying Game of Thrones, though I’ve yet to read all the books
in A Song of Ice and Fire. So, one of the challenges for myself is to
write and Epic Fantasy series. It will happen...maybe :)
How
did you get the idea for this particular novel?
I
had the great fortune to be asked to headline the brand new Decadent TEASE:
Captivate, a line of short and sweet reads from Decadent Publishing. OF course,
being asked to write a story meant I had to come up with an idea. At the time,
I was a little obsessed with a BBC show,
Silk. Featuring barristers and shenanigans, Silk was on my mind
as I was casting about for ideas for this new story. I decided the hero should
be a barrister, a circumspect man for whom propriety was of utmost
importance...So therefore, his heroine had to be a lady mired in scandal. Next
thing I knew, SILK & SCANDAL was in my head and ready to be written down!
What
is your favorite scene in your new release?
I
really like the prologue, which is a series of letters between Nicola and
Thomas over eight years. They sum up Nicola and Thomas’s relationship
beautifully, and I’m so proud of them.
Flirting Quickies:
Boxers
or Briefs?
Hmm, I think they both have their
place... ;)
Planner
or Panster?
A mix of both. I’ll plan a scene
really loosely, but if it goes off on a tangent, I’m more than happy to follow.
White wine or red?
A nice
cheeky Shiraz :)
Coffee or tea?
Coffee,
definitely. SUCH a coffee snob!
Vanilla or chocolate?
Chocolate
– mmm.
Sweet or salty?
I reckon salty – love
those plain potato chips
Sleep in or get up
early?
Sleep in. I am NOT a
morning person.
Laptop or desktop?
Desktop
Winter or summer?
Winter. It’s winter in
Australia at the moment and I’m loving the wet and the cold. Blankets and
heaters are so cool :)
Backpacking or luxury
hotel?
Depends where I am – if
I’m sightseeing all day and some of the night, backpackers is a-ok. However, if
I’m lazing about on some tropical beach somewhere...def luxury hotel

DeleteI always love a romance where they start out as friends, it just seems more authentic than a quick romance. Thanks for the excerpt

Hi Shannon,
DeleteThat's so very true! I deliberately chose to have Nicola and Thomas know each other before the beginning of the story, to be good friends who are already most of the way in love. It definitely makes for a more believable romance when you have a shorter word count :)
Thanks so much for the interview! I'm loving this tour so far!
